Resize first, then compress
Compression and resizing are different levers, and using both — in that order — is what produces the huge savings. Resizing reduces the pixel dimensions; a photo displayed 800 pixels wide gains nothing from being stored at 4000 pixels wide. Compression then stores those pixels more efficiently. Shrink a 12-megapixel phone photo to 1600px and compress it to around 80% quality and you routinely go from 5 MB to under 200 KB with no difference the eye can see at normal size.

Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my image get?
Photos straight from a phone or camera typically shrink 60–90% at quality 70–80 with no visible loss at normal viewing sizes. Screenshots and graphics vary more; watch the live preview and pick the lowest quality that still looks clean.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The entire compression happens in your browser using the Canvas API. The image never leaves your device — which also means no file-size limits, no queue and no privacy risk.
Should I choose JPEG or WebP?
WebP produces files roughly 25–30% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality and is supported by every modern browser. Choose JPEG only when the file must open in older software or be maximally compatible (e.g. email attachments to unknown recipients).
What happens to PNG transparency?
JPEG doesn't support transparency, so transparent areas become white when you compress to JPEG. Choose WebP output to keep transparency while still compressing heavily.
Why did my file get bigger instead of smaller?
If the original was already heavily compressed (or is a small graphic), re-encoding at a high quality setting can produce a larger file. Lower the quality slider, or keep the original if the tool shows a size increase.
